How to Make Your Cowboy Boots Last for Years

Jan 20 2026

A good pair of cowboy boots is an investment. Whether you just picked up your first pair of Ariats or you've been wearing Justin Boots for decades, taking care of your boots will keep them looking great and feeling comfortable for years to come.

Here's what we recommend to our customers at Blue Ridge Outfitters.

Clean Them Regularly

Dirt and dust break down leather over time. After wearing your boots, give them a quick wipe with a dry cloth or soft brush to remove surface dirt. For a deeper clean, use a damp cloth and let them air dry away from direct heat—never put them by a heater or in direct sunlight, which can crack the leather.

Condition the Leather

Leather is skin, and just like your skin, it needs moisture. Apply a leather conditioner every few weeks if you wear your boots regularly, or once a month for occasional wear. Work it in with a soft cloth and let it absorb before wearing. This keeps the leather supple and prevents cracking.

Let Them Rest

If you wear boots daily, try to rotate between two pairs. Leather needs time to dry out from the moisture your feet produce. Giving your boots a day off between wears helps them hold their shape and last longer.

Use Boot Trees or Stuff Them

When you're not wearing your boots, boot trees help them keep their shape—especially in the shaft. Don't have boot trees? Rolled-up newspapers or pool noodles cut to size work fine.

Store Them Right

Keep your boots in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. If you're storing them for a while, give them a good clean and condition first. Avoid plastic bags, which can trap moisture.

Know When to Resole

The soles and heels wear down over time, but that doesn't mean your boots are done. A good cobbler can resole your boots and give them another decade of life. It's almost always worth it for quality boots.
